Food Security.

Using regenerative agriculture and climate resilient initiatives to nourish both people and planet.

The Food Forest Project.

The food forest project creates employment for women farmers, decreases malnutrition and promotes regenerative agriculture in the Huye district of Rwanda. An organic food forest demonstration garden has been established to train members of the community in permaculture methods and climate resilience initiatives.

More about the Food Forest.

As the first of many food forest projects we hope to run, we planted trees (avocados, moringa, papayas, mangoes, oranges, lemons and apples), a range of nourishing vegetables and medicinal plants such as strawberries, nasturtium, gooseberries, fleabane, ginger bush, clove basil, aloe and tree tomatoes. 110 women have been trained on how to create permagardens on their own land. Each are provided with seeds and receive education in regenerative agriculture, nutrition, wellness and breathwork, WASH (hygiene) and financial planning. These women have become ambassadors, going out among the community to teach other families how to grow nutritious food and form savings groups.

More than 1000 people are expected to be impacted indirectly through “teach one to teach another” program led by the trained female beneficiaries. The quality of life for beneficiaries will improve over time as they continue to implement the principles they will be taught in training. Environmental protection initiatives will also be implemented within the community. There will be a variety of nutritious fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants grown on the farm and in the food forest that will feed the community. Small income generating projects will be created thus reducing poverty among the community. 70% ofthose employed for the project will be poor women who need a source of income.
