The Aspire School.
Our partner is Aspire Rwanda, a local NGO based in Kigali, Rwanda. Together we operate and oversee the Aspire Preschool, which provides a safe, nurturing place for 90 children living in extreme poverty to learn, play and thrive.
The program.
The 90 children enrolled at the Aspire Preschool live in the slums of Kigali. Many would be malnourished, suffer from chronic illness, and would fall quickly behind in primary school due to their circumstances if not for the nutritious meals they receive each day. Instead they are learning English, French and Kinyarwanda; gardening, dance, play, mathematics, storytelling and good hygiene practices.
Establishing this school was very important for the community because oftentimes small children are left in the care of young female siblings while their mothers are at work. These young girls are not capable of providing proper supervision and are sometimes kept home from school to provide childcare for the family, compounding the problem.
